About

This animated short explores a girls relationship with her home as she comes of age. As she grows older the environment becomes increasingly desolate, with the incoming ships alluding to a period of war. Though by the end her forest is destroyed the girl still returns to the recurring red flower, a Ukrainian poppy, which is meant to symbolize her resilience through change.

The backgrounds were illustrated by my teammate Jenny Nykonorova, with the flora and fauna featured taking inspiration from the native wildlife in Crimea. The changing seasons are meant to mirror the girl’s state of mind as she’s growing up.

Jenny designed the character and I did the frame animation on Procreate Dreams. We were mindful about maintaining consistensy while also making each stage feel distinctive in personality.

I composited the environments and character animation together in AfterEffects. The side scrolling camera animation guides the audience through the story organically, with the momentum reflecting it’s tone.
